Replace the UPC Barcode with GS1 Digital Link

Organizations using UPC barcodes on their packaging should prepare for the GS1 Digital Link. There are several examples of companies using the GS1 Digital Link standard in place of UPC barcodes. For instance, Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) has implemented the GS1 Digital Link to provide consumers with access to product information and promotions for its Smartwater brand. The new Smartwater bottles feature a QR code that directs consumers to a website with detailed product information, including ingredients, nutritional information, and recycling instructions.

Another example is Nestle, which has implemented the GS1 Digital Link standard for its Gerber baby food products. The new Gerber packaging features a QR code that directs consumers to a landing page with detailed information about the product, including ingredients, nutritional information, and videos on how to use the product. Moreover, Walmart, Target, and Kroger are using the GS1 Digital Link to enhance supply chain transparency and track products from farm to shelf. These companies are creating a digital link between products and the various stakeholders involved in the supply chain, enabling them to access real-time information on product origin, quality, and safety.
